Some tips to teach you how to determine what causes high CPU usage:
Step 1
Click with the right mouse button on the taskbar on your Windows desktop. The taskbar is normally at the bottom of the screen; it’s the bar where the “Start” menu is located. The right-click will open a menu with several options.
Step 2
Click on Task Manager to open a new window that shows all your running programs by default.
Step 3
Click the “Processes” tab near the top of the window. The “Processes” tab shows a list of all the processes running on your computer, as well as the percentage of CPU capacity and memory they are using.
Step 4
Click on CPU at the top of the middle column in the processes window. This will sort the list by CPU usage. Those with the highest usage will be at the bottom of the list, and you can now easily see what is causing the spike in CPU usage.

If you click on CPU a second time in the processes window, it will reverse the order, and those with the highest usage will display at the top of the list.
Processes and programs using a high percentage of your CPU can significantly decrease your computer’s performance. If CPU usage reaches 100 percent, your programs or even your entire operating system can freeze up and force you to restart, potentially losing all unsaved data in programs you were working on. If you start to notice a sudden performance decrease, and suspect CPU usage may be the culprit, you can check exactly which processes and programs are using the most CPU power.
